Welcome to this tutorial — we are delighted to have you along and we are expecting that you’re going to become a better and better journalist, writer and learn how to write accurately, to research accurately, and to bring facts not just to the general public but also to specific groups who need extra educational help.
An example of an analysis to give you is about South Africa’s last apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner FW de Klerk. Now he was a man who, in an article we’ve already published on our increasingly large web platform, is described as a leader who was not driven by ideology, but rather as a pragmatist.
This is an article which argues that he wasn’t an ideologist and of course therefore it’s not purely factually based. There are several questions for you to consider when I give you the link to the article. The first is whether referring back to a no-longer-active political leader who negotiated peace can be a way to set out the current state of that country.
1. Is this article a valid way to do it!
2. The second question: what are its benefits and its drawbacks?
3. And the third and last question I’m asking here is: does the fact that it’s labelled as an opinion or comment or op ed piece make a difference to the way it can be written and structured?
This is the end of the tutorial. But of course, when your responses will be sent to us, we will analyse them and have another tutorial to listen to the way that you each have analysed this, and then see if we can all move forward together.
